In the last summer of my mother's life (she was under Hospice at home)I stopped at the "strawberry lady's" stand to get two pints of fresh strawberries her husband had picked that morning, and took them to my mother.

She was so thrilled, saying I've been thinking about strawberries all day! An hour later her next door neighbor rang the bell and I was stunned to see her standing there with two large grocery bags full of strawberries, more than two families would need. She said her brother-in-law had some business with a local strawberry farm and they paid him in mounds of the fruit, and she just thought my mom would like them. Inside: more astonishment on my mom's face.

Early in the evening we were surprised by my husband's folks, two brothers and kids (everyone was aware that time was short for my mom) and they kinda bowled themselves inside all cheery and talkative.....and bearing a large carton of strawberries from a stand they'd passed on their drive from Portland!

That night when I said goodnight to my mom she said it has been a beautiful and exciting day and she asked me to remember that sometimes all we have to do is wish and wishes come true.

You brought back a precious memory for me with this post.Lydiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11135393270656573516noreply@blogger.com
